Chapter Eight
Will
“You going home now?” Lynn asked, glancing at the clock as I encountered her in the waiting area at the clinic.
“Yes,” I replied, giving her a grateful smile. “Thanks for handling things before the new vet arrives. I know I’ve been skipping out on you guys a lot of late.”
“We all understand, Will,” she replied. “And we’re only too glad to help. We like seeing you this happy, and we never thought we would see you smile so much again after Luke died.”
I tore my eyes away from her, so she didn’t see how miserable I actually was at this moment. Nothing was going according to plan. I was taking time off for a wedding I wasn’t even sure was going to happen anymore. But, I had to believe Ainsley and I would survive this bizarre phase we were going through.
I was hoping it was just pre-wedding jitters. He had the whole day to relax, and I prayed my Ainsley would be back when I got home. I had never seen this side of him before. This was beyond his usual zany personality.
“I’ll see you guys at the wedding of course.” Somehow, I got the words out and even smiled at her.
“Free cake? You bet we’ll be there.”
I chuckled, the sound turning hollow as I remembered being Ainsley’s cake taster. I’d had more fun doing the tasting than I had thought I would have.
I said my farewells and got into my truck, eager to get home, but found myself driving slowly. Something major was up with Ainsley, and it bothered me that he wouldn’t confide in me about it. After the whole fiasco had gone down at the fitting of our tuxes, I had driven him home as he had requested. He hadn’t wanted to speak to me, so I had left him alone. Big mistake. He’d gone up to our room and locked himself inside. Even Cotton had been aware of his master’s state. He had moped around the house, scratching at the bedroom door until Ainsley had let him in.
He had ignored me completely. I had made a shameless spectacle of myself, bringing him something to eat, confessing my love for him, and even once begging him to speak to me. I got nothing out of him. Occasionally, I had thought I heard sobs, but I couldn’t know for certain. It drove me nuts. It drove me up the wall, wished I could read minds so I could get into his head and see what was wrong. The only other time Ainsley had been this upset about us was when he had thought I would fuss about his love for sex, especially penetrative sex, but we had gotten over that already, so it had to be something else.
Eventually, he had unlocked the door so I could access my stuff, but he had stayed out of my way, taking Cotton for a walk. Dinner had been an awkward affair. It was so depressing, I had been close to tears.
